Complimentary Colors

Choosing complementary colors for your painting also helps the viewer's eye to be guided to the focal point.

It is another type of contrast that will draw your viewer into the painting.

Neutral Tint

When trying to darken or dull a color you can do one of two things.

Either add the compliment or add neutral tint.

 

When you add a complimentary color to the original color, it will darken it.

(The complimentary color is the opposite color on the color wheel)

For instance, if you want to darken a red, just add green to it.

 

 

The same goes for purple and yellow and for blue and orange.

 

Or you can use neutral tint.

Which you can buy in a tube.

Or you can make your own.

To make your own, mix French Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna!

Another great use for those two fabulous colors.

So to darken a red, just add some French Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna.
