Paint Goes Where There is Water

The really cool part about spraying paint is that the paint will only travel into areas where there is water.

The white on the above painting was not masked out.

It occurred because the water that I sprayed did not land in those areas.

For some really fun effects, pour some paint onto your paper, and spray it with a spray bottle.

Use one that has a dribbly harder spray as opposed to a soft mist.

You can push your paint around and spray it into other parts of your paper and other colors.

It is exciting to watch how the paint and water react to each other.

I have another type of spray bottle that I like to use in painting.

It has a harder spray and I can control how much water spritzes out of the nozzle.

I use this spray bottle for some really fun and cool effects.

Since it is a harder spray, it will dribble and drip onto the surface of the paper instead of evenly coating it with a fine mist.

So I use it to push my paint around and see let the water and paint flow.

The thing to remember is that the paint will usually only flow into areas that have water.

Too much water will cause it to flow too far and too fast.

Sometimes you want that.

Sometimes you don't.

 

It is also best to do this technique on paper that has not been stretched.

You want the paint to skip across the surface and will do so better if the sizing is still in the paper. 

The Hollyhocks are done using this technique.

Misting Bottle

Many art stores carry spray bottles that do have a light mist.

 

My favorite mister is a bottle that some sort of body spritz came in.

It was one of those gifts that a family member gave me about 15 years ago. 

I immediately dumped the smelly spritzy stuff and have used the bottle ever since.

It was one of the best gifts I have ever received. 

 

Eye glass cleaner bottles also make great misters. 

Just don't mix it up with the real eye glass cleaner.

 

So before you go running off to the art store, be sure to check around your house for a bottle with a nice light mist.

The cosmetics expert in your house just might have one they are willing to part with.

 

Keeping It Moist

When working wet-in-wet, it can be hard to keep your paper moist.

This is when I have a spray bottle handy.

It needs to be a spray bottle that has a light mist though.

I will use this light mister to spray the air (about 6-8 inches) above my painting. 

That way the air is keep humid and moist and I don't have water drops affecting my wash.
